London society migrated to Brussels on the news that Napoleon had escaped from Elba and was marching triumphantly through France.
The final battle of the Naoleonic Wars was anticipated. Wellington knew that he had to be allied with the Prussians to beat Napoleon, and chose the Low Countries as the site of the battle.
Weekly Balls were among the social events, but one in particular is remembered because of the significance of the message received that Napoleon had entered Belgium.
